ARMOR | A HELPING HAND

PROBLEM & SOLUTION

My problem focuses on people with disabilities, specifically people that are handicapped. I dedicated my armor to my grandfather who has polio and is paralyzed from the waist down which makes it difficult to perform activities of daily living from a wheelchair. However, with my grabbing tool I wanted to allow the handicapped user to grab items with ease without any fear of injury. This will give these people with this disability instant independence.

PROGRAMMING & PARTI |

REPRESENTATION | EXTENSIOS

My project is called Extensios, which is Latin for extension. This name was derived from my armor, which was an extension of the user’s arm. This was the concept and design that I incorporated into my project. The site I chose was North Hall and I decided to take these once boring and unadorned buildings and insert my program into it to give it a different appearance. My idea was to have these plug-in moments going into the original buildings and give each building its own personality.

In order to do this, I distributed each program in a different building. One became a super dorm, the other became a party space, the third is for eating and dining, and the last one is a study space. My concept was to use the space of the original building and better enhance it. For example, in my super dorms I completely changed the layout of the room and provided much more accommodating and improved space. I borrowed the restrooms and showers from the original building as well as the existing circulation. Although, I designed bridges that created a combined experience of the 4 otherwise divided original buildings. Furthermore, to promote a drastic extension my programs extend out from the original buildings. The plug-ins of my programs cantilever over the adjacent hill and provide open views.
